In Vision by Deborah Hobson & Shahina Jaffer

6th January - 30th January

‘In Vision’ is an exhibition of largely figurative and abstract works by two artists that beckons the viewer to look beyond what is immediately visible. Both artists share a concern with the encounter between art and the onlooker and explore within their own disciplines political messaging, commemoration, remembrance, processes, materiality, natural resources and the environment.

Deborah Hobson’s objective as a Black artist and political activist is to create work which is socially engaged, stimulates or provokes radical dialogue or disturbs the status quo. The focus of her practice is mainly portraiture where she uses graphite pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and oil paints on paper and canvas.

Shahina Jaffer's artistic output is centred on perception, and it encompasses all natural phenomena, corporeal or celestial. Using paint, water, and the elements as conductors of energy. Her work focuses on the exploration of movement, allowing paint to flow freely and without interruption. Her work encourages and investigates the encounter between artist and observer by combining emotional intuition and empirical observation. Jaffer's creative exploration, combined with her extensive knowledge of human behaviour, pushes traditional boundaries, revealing a deeper meaning in her work that might otherwise go unnoticed. She described her distinct point of view in an interactive TEDx talk titled "The Art of Perception." She believes that art should be a participatory experience in which the viewer embarks on a personal journey.
